Face Tools
3D models are composed of faces. Those faces are composed of edges. And those edges are composed of vertices. When you move, rotate, or scale a face, you are actually moving its vertices. Manipulating and creating faces is essential when building complex 3D models.
The standard move, rotate and scale tools in the Tool Bar allow you to modify a face's geometry (the position of its vertices). While specialized Face Tools allow you to change a mesh's topology and geometry simultaneously. Simply put, changing a mesh's topology is a fancy way of saying adding, removing or changing connections in a mesh. The Face Tools below allow you to create new faces and/or modify their geometry.
Face Tools are contextual aware. So they will appear when the the active Component Selection is Faces. Face Tools are located in the Tool Bar under the standard select, move, rotate and scale tools.
Modeler Interface
Extrude Tool
Extruding a face creates new faces that emerge out of the original face. In other words, extruding a face makes it extend in the direction it was facing (see below).
Tap this button to activate the extrude face tool.
Extrude Faces (Keep Faces Together: ON)
Extrude Faces (Keep Faces Together: OFF)
The Extrude Tool has a Keep Faces Together option you can access by tapping its button again after it has become the active tool. When the Keep Faces Together option is on, when you extrude neighboring faces, the faces will be treated as one face. This prevents creating extra faces between the neighboring faces.
Inset Tool
Insetting a face creates new faces that emerge in or out of the original face. In other words, insetting a face creates a new face that is offset laterally into or out of the face.
Tap this button to activate the inset face tool.
Inset Faces (Keep Faces Together: ON)
Inset Faces (Keep Faces Together: OFF)
The Inset Tool has a Keep Faces Together option you can access by tapping its button again after it has become the active tool. When the Keep Faces Together option is on, when you to inset adjacent faces, the faces will be treated as one face. This prevents creating extra faces between the adjacent faces.
Poke Tool
Poking a face creates new faces that poke out or into the original face. In other words, poking a face creates a new vertex at the center of the face and pushes that vertex out or inwards. The new center vertex is connected to all the vertices in the original face.
Tap this button to activate the poke tool.
Poke Faces
Crease Tool
The crease tool allows you to set the crease level of a face or faces. In other words, the crease tool allows you to set the sharpness of the face's edges when it's subdivided. The result of using this tool is most apparent when a subdivision modifier is on the mesh being edited.
Tap this button to activate the crease tool.
